Te Matuku Bay

Te Matuku Bay was once a busy thriving community, but that was 135 years ago. These days its quiet, with a vineyard at its head waters called Passage Rock Wines. Here you can have a pizza from a wood fired oven. Lots of history here... it is known that a ghost is resident at the mystery graveyard. Tematuku Bay has Auckland's highest mangrove forest and a very unusual sand spit lagoon. Many wading sea birds congregate along with the rare dottarel. The sand spit is one of Waiheke's wonders of how it ever formed. Te Matuku Marine Reserve (690ha) protects one of Waiheke Island's largest and least disturbed estuaries and an area outside Te Matuku Bay in the Waiheke Channel.
